Metal Surface Preparation

Metal roofs will rust if left unprotected against water, snow, and humidity. Preventing or minimizing roof damage is far less expensive than replacing the roof.

To prepare metal roofs all rust must be removed by scraping and wire brushing the rusted areas.

Clean the roof surface THOROUGHLY by scrubbing with a mixture of water and commercial TSP (Trisodium Phosphate) solution to remove dirt, oils and grease. You can purchase TSP at most retailers with a paint department. This will ensure proper bonding of the coating to the surface

After rusted areas have been scraped and cleaned, be sure to prime these areas with a metal primer. Metal primers are available from most retailers with paint departments. Use a paint brush to apply the primer.

Check for mildewed areas and remove mildew by treating the area with chlorine bleach. Rinse thoroughly and let dry.

Where ponded water exists beyond 3 days, roof drains or other corrective measures must be taken to eliminate water build-up.

Inspect flashing around vents, stacks, chimneys, and air conditioners for splitting and damage to roof surfaces. It is important to repair these areas and seal seams to prevent leaks and create a watertight repair. (See the easy 3-step application process for either Elastomeric or Aluminum Coating Systems. If you are uncertain which system to use, check our Roof Type guide.)

For best results on new metal roofs apply after the metal has weathered for 120 days to more easily remove residual oils from manufacture.
